I am reminded every day how lucky I am to be the principal of Tyler Elementary School. I love teaching and learning, and at Tyler we are committed to providing your child with rich learning and educational experiences. I believe in doing what is best for children, and I will always use this as my guiding force when making decisions about our school.
I welcome you to involve yourself in our school in a variety of ways.
Together, we can make this school year a success!

Snow Days - Revised Schedule
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Due to the extreme winter, Van Buren Public Schools has had to close school eleven (11) days so far this year. Under current state law, only six (6) days may be "forgiven". Therefore, we need to make up five (5) additional days of school.
Unfortunately, being so late in the school year, no option chosen to address the addition of those school days will appease all families. Many families have made plans for Spring Break, that at this late date cannot be changed, and there are no other full days available in the current calendar. Therefore, we will need to eliminate as many of the remaining half days as possible and then add the rest of the days to the end of the school year.
Here are the changes that you need to be made aware of:
While there is no doubt the extension of the calendar another week in June will be a hardship for some families, the additional days are critical for the continued educational growth of all the students in the Van Buren Public School District. Since attendance within each school must be above 75% or the day does not "count", I am respectfully requesting that, if at all possible, families adjust their schedules so that students are in school on all remaining days.
Should the need to cancel school arise again, the year will continue to be extended as explained above.
Thank you so much for your continued support and understanding during this most difficult winter season.
Michael L. Van Tassel

Michigan's Common Core Standards
All Tyler teachers use the MIchigan Common Core Standards to plan, implement, and assess the lessons they teach in their classrooms. Building on the excellent foundation of standards states have laid, the Common Core State Standards are the first step in providing Tyler students with a high-quality education. It should be clear to every student, parent, and teacher what the standards of success are. You can read the Common Core by clicking on the tab at the far right of your screen --->.
